I should be writing about McCain and Obama's energy plans, not responding to warmed-over arguments for the place of creationism in public school science class

noraleah:

And yet, here I am again. So I’d better make this short.

I’m proud that we live in a representative democracy that, despite the best efforts of the religious right and their allies, ensures that most public schools are free of religious propaganda.

This is silly.  I’m not arguing that creationism should be presented as fact in public schools any more than I’m suggesting that we teach as fact that Muslim martyrs go to paradise and are met by 72 virgins.  But don’t you think our kids should be taught that some people believe that?

Do you want to send kids into the world thinking that everyone in the world thinks just like they do?  That the world is cookie-cutter Fairfield County or Westchester?  I sure as hell don’t.

Teaching kids about Communism doesn’t mean that they’re going to grow up to be commies.  Teaching kids about creationism doesn’t mean they’re going to grow up to be Southern Baptists.
